Gears of War 2 Thoughts (Part 2)

Recently, I've started playing Gears of War again, and after having been pawned (repeatedly) by my brother and his friend tonight (gamer tags below), an additional feature for my Gears Of War 2 Wish List occurred to me.

Warzone or Assassination w/Bots

EPIC's Unreal Tournament allows death match game play using Bots; computer controlled team members and enemies. That feature should be added to Gears Of War 2. Sure, there's going to be a single player campaign that can be played in that fashion, but the ability to practice (complete with multiple difficulty levels) on the multi-player maps would be good for those thirty-something year old players like me....

3G iPhone?

We've all known for some time that a 3G iPhone is coming, the only questions have been when, and with what enhancements.  Well, the rumor mill has been very active, and the word on the street is that the new 3G iPhone will be brushed metal with two flash memory configurations; 16GB and 32GB.  Beyond that it will have a camera on the front of the phone for iChat video!!!

I guess we'll have to wait and see...

Unreal Engine 3 Tech Demo

For those of you who haven't seen this yet.... Below is a video of the Tech Demo that EPIC conducted to illustrate the improvements to the Unreal Engine 3 (which powers Gears of War).  The presenter, Tim Sweenie, even goes so far as to state "this is what Gears of War would look like if we were to release it today..."

Hmmm...  Could EPIC be wetting our appetites for a GOW GOTY after all?

Gears of War 2 Pre-order

Gears of War 2 is now available for pre-order on Amazon.com for $59.99 (order it here).

Amazon.com has listed the released date as November 30, 2008, likely because they don't know the exact date of the release, just that it will be released in November.

PS3: Unreal Tournament 3 v2.1 Mod 'Cooking' Tool Available

Unreal Tournament 3 v2.1 Mod 'Cooking' Tool is now available.

I think releases like these will help to distinguish the PS3 from the XBox 360, and here's why:

Microsoft has taken more of a closed system approach, and would rather have the developer create  levels for their games, and have you pay for them.

Sony has decided to go a different direction, and are allowing user created content!!!  The UT3 v2.1 Mod Cooking Tool will allow you to download UT3 Mods (created by the user community) and import them for play on your PS3!!!

NOTE: You'll also need PC Patch v1.2 installed on your Windows PC.

Perhaps 2008 will be the year of the PS3...

Is the PS3 finally Home?

There's a rumor circulating that a public beta of Home will start on April 18th.  I'm still waiting for the confirmation on the date, but if it's true.... Joy!!!

Wii Fit is available for pre-order

Wii Fit is now available for pre-order at GameStop for $89.99, and will be released in North America on May 19th.

Michael Pachter (of Wedbush Morgan)  claims that Nintendo is planning the largest marketing campaign in the company’s history and that major retailers (including Target and Best Buy) will be involved.

Gears of War 2 Thoughts

Unless you've been living under a rock, you know that Gears of War (GOW) 2 is scheduled for release in November 2008 (which still leaves more than enough time for a GOW GOTY release!!!) .

Here is my GOW 2 wish list:

More Back Story

The first GOW game did a really good job of giving us a small taste of what was to come.  IMHO, this is perfectly okay for a first game; however, the sequel should fill in as many gaps as possible without giving away too much, so as to leave room for at least a trilogy.

Locust Campaign

How about a Locust campaign; allowing the player to view the encounter from the viewpoint of a Locust Soldier.  Thus far, we've experienced things from the COG point of view, which looks at the Locust as some sort of evil infestation.  However,  something triggered the Locust Horde into action.  From what we're able to surmise, it was the humans consumption of Imulsion that triggered the attack known as Emergency Day.   Currently, we know little about the organization of the Locust Horde, except that there is a Locus Queen and a few different classes of Locust Soldiers.  I would guess that they have some sort of colony organization, like bees or ants.  Such a campaign would give us more insight into what's happening on the other side.

Four Player Co-op

How about four player co-op featuring the cast of the last game; Marcus, Dom, Baird, and Cole would be awesome.  GOW 2 could still feature the branches, where two players go one direction, and the other two take a different path.

Multiplayer with Vehicles

EPIC's Unreal Tournament 3 (which shares the same engine) gives players the option to use vehicles during online play.  This would be an awesome addition to GOW 2.  I envision a multiplayer mode called Battlefield where COG Soldiers use Ravens (Helicopters) and APCs, and Locust Soldiers use Reavers and Seeders.

Content Censorship

The first GOW game provided the ability to turn off the "Extreme Content", meaning you could scale down the blood and gore.  It would  be nice if EPIC could extend that feature to the language as well.  Great games don't need strong language. ;-)

Halo 3 : Heroic Map Pack for free

The Heroic Map Pack will be free this Tuesday on XBox Live Marketplace.

If you've been waiting for a price drop before picking up Halo 3, it's on sell at Amazon.com for $40.99 no tax and free shipping.

More details on the Heroic Map Pack are here.

Sonic Unleashed?

It seems that a video of the (yet to be officially announced) Sonic Unleashed has landed on YouTube. I've never been much of a Sonic fan (outside of a brief fetish back in the Sega Genesis days) but this new Sonic is very impressive graphically.  Details are sketchy, but the word on the street is that it'll see release on PS3, XBox 360, and Wii.

More details and screenshots can be found here.

Dragonball Z: Burst Limit

My inner-child just cried out in joy!!!  Just when I was about to breakdown and buy Dragonball Z Budokai 3 for Wii, which I've heard has terrible online play due to friend codes and latency, I see the Atari is releasing Dragonball Z: Burst Limit for Playstation 3 and XBox 360.

With better graphics, 3D effects, sound, and online play...  Can I pre-order this one now?

More details can be found here and here.

The Agency for PS3

Finally, it seems at least one of the console makers is trying to give us something that I've wanted for some time... Massively Multi-player Online (MMO) games that don't require that don't require a monthly fee...  Okay there Sony, I've said it, so don't turn me into a liar!!!

Check out the video below.

InFamous for PS3

Ever since I first played Crackdown on the XBox 360, I have pined to extend the experience on a Crackdown sequel.  Well, unfortunately no Crackdown sequel is coming anytime soon... However, if you enjoyed playing Crackdown, and just so happen to have a Sony PS3, then you may have reason to rejoice soon!!!  Infamous, seems to embrace everything that made Crackdown a great game, but goes even further with the concepts...

Check out the video below.

Haloid - Master Chief vs Samus Aran

The video below has been around on the Internet for a while... However, I was so captivated the first time that I saw it, I just had to post it here.  For those of you who've already seen it, please feel free to enjoy it again.  For those of you who haven't yet seen this... There are no words.... ;-)

Aliens: Colonial Marines

Finally it looks like a new Aliens game is being created that's worthy of the franchise!!!   This time there's no Aliens Vs. Predator theme; just aliens, marines, and plenty of firepower!!! Aliens: Colonial Marines is scheduled to be released for XBox 360, PS3, and PC during the Holiday season of 2008.  I'm definitely going to keep my eyes on this one!!!

Gears of War: Game of the Year Edition

I must say, I'm really surprised that Microsoft and EPIC never released a Gears Of War: Game of the Year Edition.  I and everyone I've talked to that owns Gears Of War for the XBox 360 are in agreement.  If Microsoft/EPIC released GOW: GOTY with the extra content the PC version received (including the additional chapter, the Brumak as a boss character, and some new achievements) we'd buy it!!!!   We all heard EPIC say that it couldn't be released as downloadable content... yeah, yeah... we know...  So why no new retail game then?

Microsoft/EPIC are you listening?

The Future is Blu...

There are lots of rumors swirling about Microsoft either releasing an external Blu-Ray drive for the XBox 360, or a new SKU with an internal Blu-Ray drive.  A Sony executive is rumored to have spilled the beans...  Either way, Sony wins...

Don't take my word for it, read it yourself here

A Jump on the competition

Let me start by saying I own all 3 consoles.  Admittedly, I use the XBox 360 the most, and the Wii the least.  It's not that I like the PS3 or Wii any less than my 360, it's just there are currently more games that I want to play on the 360 (e.g. Gears of War and Mass Effect).  There are many great cross-platform titles (360 and PS3) that have been released (e.g. Call of Duty 4), but the truth is, most of my friends have 360's.  So, if I want to play with them, I have to get the 360 version... :-(
There have been some rumors circling that Microsoft may be planning to release their next next-gen console early (e.g. Nov/Dec 2009).

I think if Microsoft follows what Nintendo has done with the Wii, it could be a great idea!!!   No, I'm not talking about a Wand controller (although that would be nice!)...  I'm referring to the fact that a Wii is little more than a more powerful GameCube with a revolutionary controller.  As such, the Wii is backwards compatible with the GameCube.

Microsoft could do something very similar.  They could create a new XBox that has a faster CPU and GPU (each with perhaps twice the performance of their XBox 360 counterparts).  This would mean that all of the current development tools and accessories would work on the new console (to be referred to as XBox 4D for the remainder of this blog entry).  XBox 4D would be backwards compatible with the XBox 360 (via hardware).  Microsoft could also fix the mistakes they made with the 360, by including an integrated high definition drive in XBox 4D...  Blu-Ray anyone?

It gets better... Now imagine that third parties could continue creating "current-gen" games for the XBox 360 (which would also run on XBox 4D), and also create games for the new system that would've been either difficult or impossible to create on the 360.  This means games like Metal Gear Solid 4, which I've read (rumor) would require more than 4 DVDs for the full game, could be placed on a single Blu-Ray disk and run on XBox 4D.   In addition, since the XBox 4D would be significantly more powerful than the 360 (and PS3), games like Crysis can be seen in their full PC glory in full 1080P native resolution.

What about your XBox 360?  Well, until there are games that you just have to have, you could stick with your 360...  However, if Gears of War 3 Special Edition were to be released for 4D, you could to take the plunge!!!  Just start using your peripherals and games on the new console, and sell your old one on Ebay!

From a marketing standpoint, Microsoft could reduce the price of the XBox 360 Premuim Edition to $249 (Core $199 and Elite $349), and sell the XBox 4D for $499.  They could market the XBox 360 as their low-end console (competing against the PS2 and Wii), and the XBox 4D as their high-end console (competing against the PS3).  They would need to continue developing software for the 360, while bringing titles that would not be possible to create with current-gen systems to the Xbox 4D.

Below are the specs for the (imaginary) XBox 4D:

Xenon 2 CPU (A performance enhanced version of the CPU found in the XBox 360)
Xenos 2 GPU (A performance enhanced version of the GPU found in the XBox 360)
1GB RAM (compared to 512MB in the XBox 360)
160GB Internal Hard Disk (compared to 120GB in the XBox 360 Elite)
Blu-Ray Drive (compared to the current Dual Layer DVD drive)

Does anyone else see the possibilities that I do?  Or have I gone temporarily insane?
